San Francisco Film Permits: A Producer's Checklist

Lead time, insurance minimums, parking, neighborhood notices, and drones. What Film SF asks for before you shoot on San Francisco streets.

Shoots that use San Francisco's public property, meaning streets, sidewalks, parks, or on-street parking, go through Film SF, the city's film office. Here's what to have ready. Rules and fees change, so confirm the details with Film SF before you budget. This checklist is based on the city's own guidance on getting a permit to film in San Francisco.

Do you need a Film SF permit?

  • Yes if you're filming on public property or parking production vehicles on the street.
  • Generally no if the shoot happens entirely on private property with no impact on the street.
  • Maybe more than one. There's no blanket permit for the whole city. Some locations are managed by other agencies with their own rules, so check who controls each location on your list.

Lead time

Apply at least five business days before your shoot. Earlier is better if you're closing lanes, using a lot of parking, or shooting overnight.

Cost

Applying is free. You pay a daily fee for each day you film or park. Ask Film SF for the current fee schedule when you apply.

Insurance

Film SF needs a certificate of insurance before it will process a permit, sent to film@sfgov.org. According to the city's insurance requirements, the minimums are:

  • General liability: $1,000,000 each occurrence and $2,000,000 general aggregate, with the City named as an additional insured
  • Auto liability: $1,000,000 combined single limit. This can be waived only if no vehicles are used, including for getting to the location.

Neighborhood notices

Some shoots need notices handed out to neighbors 72 hours before filming. That includes shoots using eight or more parking spaces, closing lanes, or working between 10 p.m. and 7 a.m.

Drones

Flying a drone needs a Film SF drone request with at least $2 million in drone (UAS) liability insurance, plus your FAA authorization. The city request doesn't replace the federal one.

Where we come in

Tell us early which locations you're considering. We'll flag the permit questions while there's still time to solve them, and a smaller vehicle footprint, like our ½-ton grip truck, keeps the parking side of your permit simple.

Tell us what's missing.

One person or a full team, a day or the whole run. Send the ask and we'll confirm crew and availability the same business day, wherever you're calling from.

  1. You send the ask. Two minutes, no commitment.
  2. We confirm crew and a quote. Same business day.
  3. Names on your call sheet. Before the shoot.

We reply the same business day.
